Dowry Today

'What is in your dowry bag or chest?' is a usual question to be asked among each higher grades elementary school girls or older.

Dowry is a set of gifts a bride takes to her new home where she married with her husband prepared by either her parents or the bride herself.

During previous decades gifts set is expanded with personal gifts to each close member of the groom side of the family. The Bride side of the family does not get any gifts otherwise from the Groom side of the family or their relatives.

Dowry is therefore originally been a set of things/gifts the bride usually collects, makes or buys herself and a set of gifts for their daughter getting married collected, made or bought by her parents.

Today besides these two group of gifts one from the bride herself and other by her parents each bride family needs to prepare gifts for each close family member of the groom side of the family and their close relatives.

In some places it's only dowry presents for the groom's father, his mother and siblings.

Gifts are prepared as in Slava post explained by bride's father's side of the family or her father, bride's mother's side of the family or her mother and bride's grandmother, mother of her father.

Bride's father's side of the family is responsible for things dowry consists such as:

- education,

- intellectual knowledge,

- properties,

- gifts to the Groom's family.

At Serbia high school education is mandatory and as much I sometimes think it was wrong of my parents to convince me to go to economics preparatory college high school today I am grateful to already have a professional vocation the slightest as it is.

It was my mistake not to finish University and get my University diploma while joining in with different organizations to socialize as I was very shy after my high school experience to create life long connections as Kragujevac is a small town.

Joining University, government supported or nongovernmental organizations should be listed as mandatory during University studies as gathering intellectual knowledge this way through multiple events and through socialization with different people, of different origin or of different cultural traits.

Properties include each kind of physical property given to their daughter or granddaughter and it can be memorabilia too besides landownership, real estate ownership and amount on your bank account.

Many exclude memorabilia as not important but for me it's a way to keep memories of your family outside social media we are becoming dependent of, as so things as your grandmother's or mother's dress, an old wrist watch can mean more than that value on your bank account.

Gifts to the Groom's family depend of the family itself as it can range in so many different presents.

• Bride's mother's side of the family is responsible for the child to be well mannered meaning behavior out in public and privately.

It includes three things:

- personal appearance,

- household knowledge,

- social behaviour.

You only get one chance for a first impression and personal appearance is obviously a huge part of it. It is our mother's responsibility to dress us when we were young as of our grandmother's too with us slowly letting go to find our own style which represents our character.

As lots of clothing from my wardrobe got accidentally thrown away  last year I am making a wardrobe list of basic things every woman should have in her wardrobe to be able to combine at least a two weeks outfit assembly for each day and separate outfits for special occasions or workout.

Household knowledge was until few decades ago a mandatory elementary school subject here at Serbia and it would be a good idea to bring it back with separate curriculum for girls having cooking lessons and boys having basic how to keep your house or car "running" knowledge during elementary school.

Today it's easy enough to find any recipe with video to follow into learning how to cook but household knowledge is more than just cooking or electrical know it all as it's a way to prepare you to have your own family with all it takes for your future family to be well organized.

Social behaviour is having good manners, respect for the elderly and all people in general, how you behave with the people you do not know and people considered as good friends or aquanted with.

This is of the most importance as it shows besides your organizational skills way you yourself are going to be a parent to your own children.

Creating your own family and taking care of it is something to be learned upon various sources we have available today not just from members of our family or our surroundings we live at.
